Full disclosure, this obviously can’t cover all the major artists, so I am focusing on some who spoke to me. The artistic careers of the 13 artists represented in this piece span the late 19th century to the present day. They were active in a broad range of media and styles, from impressionist to abstract expressionist painting, to sculpture, collage, and quilting. The African American experience through the years is a common thread across artistic styles and media.
