VAC membership offers these activities

Workshops, Demonstrations, and Classes

Workshops, demonstrations, and classes in various media (e.g., pastels, drawing, acrylics, photography, alcohol inks, clay and pottery, matting, and framing) are available to VAC members. These are held in the Arts and Crafts room of the Community Center; check the VAC Calendar for all opportunities. Some workshops are free to VAC members; others are offered at a fee for supplies and a fee to the class instructor. Check the VAC calendar on the VAC website often for event descriptions and dates as we continue to add new and exciting offerings in a wide range of artistic interests.

Open Studio

Open Studio allows VAC members to get together and work on individual or collaborative projects in a collegial atmosphere. Open Studio meets typically on Monday mornings from 10 to 12 in the Arts and Crafts room of the Community Center. Artists of all levels and media are invited to attend.

The Mixed Media Club

The Mixed Media Club is a group of all levels of artists who use more than one medium in the making of their collage/mixed media paintings and assemblages. We use custom-made papers that we have painted, dyed, texturized, stamped, or stenciled, along with found papers and objects. The group meets the first and third Wednesday of the month from 1-4 PM in the Arts and Crafts room at the Community Center. There is an annual fee of $20.00 for the cost of supplies shared by all. If you have questions, contact Lynn Baker.

Studio Tours

Several times a year, local artists’ studios are toured on Dataw and in the surrounding area. This is a great opportunity to view the work of individual artists and learn about their creative process and how they set up and use their space.

Clay Open Studio

It meets the first and third Friday of each month. Participants will work at their own pace on their projects, but experienced potters will be available to answer questions and provide guidance. The workshops will include Instructional videos, a minimum of three hours of workshop time in the Arts & Crafts room at the Dataw Community Center, and all materials, tools, and equipment, e.g., clay, glazes, molds, kiln, etc. The cost of supplies is offset by the participant’s full or partial-year fee.

Card Club

Card club members create greeting cards for holidays, special occasions, or note cards to have on hand. All materials and tools are supplied. Participants will work independently on their cards, but experienced members can answer questions and provide guidance. The VAC calendar and emails provide details regarding dates and times. The group meets in the Arts & Crafts room at the Community Center. The annual membership fee is $25, which helps pay for supplies. Card makers will find helpful information in the Card Club Booklet of Helpful Hints.

Photography Club

The photography club is for all skill levels to learn, share, and enjoy the art of photography. The club meets on the third Thursday of each month from 4-5 PM in the Multi-Purpose Room at the Community Center to discuss and demonstrate photography skills and techniques and to help members learn how to use their particular camera(s). Post-processing and archiving tools and methods are also discussed. We have a photo assignment and a critique of members’ photos each month. As a member of VAC, you are eligible to participate in the photography club; no additional fee is required.

Art Exhibits

The VAC sponsors four art exhibits a year, each with a different theme. These exhibits feature original works by Dataw artists in various media. Each exhibit opens with a reception to which all members of the Dataw Island Club are invited. Exhibit dates and themes are posted on the VAC calendar and the VAC website.

Holiday Boutique (Mistletoe Market)

The Holiday Boutique allows VAC artists to promote their work and Dataw Island Club members to purchase unique handcrafted items. Held on Sunday afternoons in November or December each year, it promotes the work of Dataw’s own artists in a holiday party atmosphere.

Special Events

The VAC sponsors various annual special events, including field trips, films, parties, lectures, and pop-up or clothesline art exhibits. If you have an idea for a special event, please get in touch with a board member. We are always looking for novel ideas that will engage, educate, and entertain our membership.
