“Clay to Art” by Jerry De Visser

On January 31, 2022, Dataw Island resident Jerry De Visser demonstrated the stages and processes of working on clay’s three basic hand construction techniques. The registration fees were donated to the St Helena Island Elementary School art program.

Participants learned about finishing, including glazing, and seeing examples of finished pieces. This was an excellent opportunity to get an introduction to clay and learn about future workshops and class opportunities for your own hands-on experiences!

Dataw Island resident Jerry De Visser is a highly experienced, talented potter. After obtaining a BA degree in Fine Arts/Art Education from Yankton College (South Dakota) and a Master’s degree in Fine Arts/Ceramics (New Jersey), Jerry dedicated his life to education. For forty years, he taught ceramics at the high school level, where he developed a four-level program deemed one of the best in the state.

VAC was fortunate to benefit from Jerry’s artistic abilities and passion for his art.
